With yet another heatwave striking the Costa del Sol this weekend, and one having just left the U.K. We thought we'd share with you some of our top tips for staying cool!
1. Stay Hydrated
The very most important thing to do in hot weather is to keep well hydrated. Drink plenty of water, even if you don't feel thirsty. Avoid alcohol which will dehydrate you further. If you do choose to consume alcohol, accompany with water.
2. Avoid Peak Hours in the Sun
Follow suit of the Spanish, and avoid baking in the sun during peak hours - Head out to do your shopping or exercise in the morning, before midday. Then wait until later in the evening to head to beach or pool. The sun is still shining until gone 9pm, so heading to the beach at 6pm is not unusual, enjoy the breeze and the cool ocean without the pounding heat of a Summer's afternoon.
3. Close Your Windows!
When the heat rises in Spring, our natural go to is to open the windows and let in the breeze, which cools our homes. When a heatwave strikes, the air outside is usually hotter than the air inside, so you are better to act against those instincts and keep windows, and where possible, blinds closed to keep the sun and heat out.
4. Avoid Unnecessary Outings
Looking out of the window on a nice, sunny day often makes us think we should be up and out, enjoying the sunshine. During a heatwave, it is best to stay indoors where possible, with air conditioning or fans and avoid being outside in the extreme heat.
5. Find Air Conditioning
If you're lucky enough to have air conditioning at home - Enjoy! If you do not have air conditioning at home, and are feeling the heat - Head to public places that are air conditioned - Libraries, Shopping Centres etc.
6. Eat Lighter or Later
Another tip we can take from Spaniards, is to eat later on. The sun is at it's peak between 2-5pm and temperatures only usually start to gradually decline from around 7pm. If you are planning a hot meal, then eating this later on in the evening, around 9 or 10pm helps you avoid becoming even hotter. If you prefer to eat earlier, try a lighter or cold meal.
7. Wear Loose Fitting Clothing
Wearing Loose Fitting clothing made of natural fibres, such as cotton, linen or silk will help your body regulate temperature. Light colours are also recommended.
8. Care for your Pets
It's not just hot for us humans during a heatwave! As you would care for children, think of your pets as well. Avoid walking dogs during the day, and always check the pavement has cooled before taking them out in the evening. Do not leave pets in your car, even for a few minutes - The temperature rises so quickly inside a closed vehicle (even with the windows partially down!).
